Private LTE and Private 5G Networks

Organizations address escalating requirements with private LTE and private 5G networks. These networks are dedicated, wireless networks separate from the wide-area public macro network.

Private LTE and Private 5G for IoT

Private LTE and 5G networks enable coverage and connectivity for agriculture.

Primary Uses

  • Locations not covered by public wireless infrastructure
  • Industries requiring automated machinery, such as mining and agriculture
  • Sectors requiring hardened equipment and low-density, long-range coverage
Robots on the factory floor will benefit immensely from private networks.

Industry 4.0

  • Factory-floor robotics such as wireless robots for greater flexibility in production line reconfiguration
  • Logistics and warehousing machinery such as pick-and-pack machines
  • Environments with devices in dense deployments and with low-latency requirements
Mission-critical services like electricity are ideal use cases for private networks.

Mission-Critical Services

  • Monitoring and control of utilities and other critical infrastructures, such as electricity distribution grids and power plants
  • Enabling public safety agencies to create closed user-group, ad hoc networks at emergency scenes
  • Developing dedicated, highly available networks for government and military agencies
Airports are an excellent use case for private networks.

Venue Services

  • Public venues, such as airports, stadiums, hospitals and ports
  • Sites with many users, including employees, contractors and visitors, who require fast, highly secure access
  • Sites that require a private network that is configurable for different user groups

Benefits of Private Networks vs. Wi-Fi

More Information

Why Use a Private LTE or Private 5G Network?

The growing number of connected devices drives new requirements that traditional public cellular networks can’t address. Verticals, such as utilities and agriculture, are exploring private cellular networks. These solutions will enable secure, on-premises deployments where public mobile networks are unavailable or not desired.

Enterprises are looking for wireless networks that provide reliable coverage with the possibility of seamless roaming from public to private networks.

Private LTE and 5G Network Applications

Private LTE and private 5G networks are used for specific Internet of Things (IoT) applications and services, including:

We are at the forefront of this technology. We bring decades of cellular leadership to offer comprehensive LTE and 5G enablement that extends from the modules to:

Our private LTE and 5G modules offer the right features at the right price with no technical or business compromise for your private cellular IoT device innovation.

Private LTE Networks for Utilities

The 450 MHz frequency band was introduced in Europe for use by utilities because of its propagation characteristics in the low-band spectrum. Bands in this spectrum area, including 900 and 700 MHz used in the U.S., penetrate structures well and propagate quite far. They require fewer base stations even if the signal can’t pack the same data capacity as its counterpart in mid and high bands.

450 MHz

The ME310G1-W2 is the world’s smallest LTE-M/NB-IoT module for the 450 MHz band. This module provides a smooth upgrade to LTE for existing CDMA 450 deployments. It’s designed for mission- and business-critical applications, including:

The ME310G1-W2 also supports LTE-M and NB-IoT enhanced coverage modes, making this module the best choice for utilities. The ME310G1-W2 also supports other European LTE bands to provide seamless roaming between private and public mobile networks.

Anterix (900 MHz)

Anterix is the largest holder of licensed spectrum in the 900 MHz band. It offers nationwide coverage throughout the contiguous United States, Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico. The ME910G1 and ME310G1 modules are FCC certified for the Anterix U.S. 900 MHz networks and connect to major U.S. MNOs. The modules’ support for Anterix’s networks provides customers with flexible private IoT device and application enablement for critical infrastructures (e.g., utilities and transportation).

Puloli (700 MHz)

Puloli is an innovative provider of standards-based, private LTE solutions for critical infrastructure industries. Puloli builds and operates end-to-end private IoT networks for vital operational systems, such as electric, water, and oil and gas delivery.

The ME910G1 and ME310G1 are available for Puloli networks, enabling NB-IoT devices and applications in the upper 700 MHz A-Block frequency band. The modules are based on the Qualcomm® 9205 LTE modem and come in a small form factor with low power consumption and a value-added services software suite. These services include:

  • An onboard application development environment
  • Out-of-the-box device management solution
  • OneEdge™, the award-winning, module-embedded software system

OnGo CBRS and Private LTE

Mobile operators or private companies can run private LTE and use a licensed, unlicensed or shared spectrum. In the U.S., the most mature shared spectrum is CBRS. CBRS was created to open the 3.5 GHz band to a wide range of users, including:

  • Incumbent users
  • Mobile and cable operators
  • Other service providers, public entities and enterprises

We were the first top-tier IoT and mobile broadband module vendor to join the OnGo Alliance (formerly known as the CBRS Alliance). The OnGo Alliance focuses on supporting the development and adoption of LTE and 5G solutions for CBRS Band 48. Our participation in the alliance drives innovation and adoption of private LTE and private 5G. We give enterprises new wireless networking options.

CBRS private LTE offers benefits that include:

  • LTE performance with Wi-Fi simplicity: CBRS delivers the capacity and security of LTE required for industrial IoT and other critical applications. It offers easier deployment and operations than Wi-Fi. You can deploy stand-alone networks with the option of connecting to an MNO.
  • Out-of-the-box solutions: CBRS vendors offer LTE complexity reduction with out-of-the-box small cell solutions that don’t need a carrier-scale, macro-core network.
  • Wireless networks customized to your needs: Building and operating any wireless network is expensive but essential for connected enterprises. CBRS provides cost-effective deployment and management of stand-alone cellular networks on-premises in a spectrum band that doesn’t require an expensive license.
  • On-premises networks: On-premises networks deliver more power and flexibility for managing security. Sensitive data stays on-premises instead of going back to an operator’s core network. They are ideal for edge computing and network slicing. Your enterprise can run and manage applications locally for optimized performance and minimal latency.

CBRS, backed by U.S. regulators and government agencies, can support 4G and 5G expansion into new consumer and industrial applications. Our expertise in enterprise-grade mobile broadband and IoT solutions and experience in customer support for regulated wireless standards (e.g., cellular) make us a natural fit for the alliance.
