Telit secureWISE®: A Secure IoT Platform for Industrial Control Systems

Improve Industrial Performance with Ultra-Secure Remote Equipment Monitoring

Telit secureWISE delivers secure, configurable, end-to-end remote connectivity to equipment over private networks. As a complete remote equipment monitoring and access system, secureWISE can significantly improve industrial equipment’s health and functionality by enabling greater visibility into capital equipment uptime and utilization. This visibility gives operators the data needed to drive predictive analytics and maintenance and provides more robust diagnostics while safeguarding critical intellectual property.

Telit secureWISE centralizes IIoT connectivity across multiple machines and vendors, so machine builders and owners can access the data they need and share only the information they choose in an exceptionally secure, customized and permissioned way. This role-based capability maximizes uptime for critical equipment, improves tool performance and reduces costly customer visits. Telit secureWISE makes it easy for toolmakers to monitor and maintain equipment remotely and mediate deployment based on real-time collaboration.

How an IoT Security Platform for Industrial Control Systems Improves Performance

Remote equipment monitoring system. The ability to remotely monitor equipment status at all times allows equipment managers to quickly intervene when issues arise, proactively determine maintenance needs and ensure that equipment use is optimized to align with production needs.

Remote maintenance system. Access to equipment expertise can be in short supply or only available in specific locations. Remote maintenance allows experts at any site to gain permissioned, secure remote access through a single pane of glass to all equipment within the factory at any time so enterprises can leverage the right maintenance resources, wherever they are. This access ensures that the equipment remains in good working condition, reduces expensive and unnecessary onsite visits, and allows them to push software updates securely.

Efficient, real-time collaboration. Teamwork is a hallmark of productive organizations. Secure remote access to equipment allows experts and team members to easily collaborate across boundaries, share expertise and solve specific problems faster. Chat features are beneficial in environments without telephones or with high noise levels. In a global company with employees who speak multiple languages, the chat feature provides a second communication path with the multilanguage function. Multiple subject matter experts can visualize and collaborate on the same problem and see the same issues in real time. Using the chat feature, a remote operator can copy and paste from the chat the command needed to troubleshoot a tool. This collaboration can lead to improved equipment performance, maximized equipment uptime and mitigation of costly downtime.

Secure end-to-end connectivity for industrial systems. As industrial systems become more complex and connected, opportunities for intrusions and security breaches increase. It’s imperative to have secure connectivity for the enterprise network and everything that the network is internally connected to — including Internet of Things (IoT) modules, devices and equipment. End-to-end secure, holistic coverage connectivity ensures all industrial systems are protected. Telit secureWISE offers a completely walled garden built into the serviceNET network. It’s completely separated from the internet, with all authorized users having non-disclosure agreements, thereby limiting the potential for bad actors.

Balance between OEM access and factory security. It’s critical to have a neutral ground that gives OEMs and fabrication plants access without allowing each other directly into their systems to protect high-value intellectual property. The secureWISE server, which is deployed on the hosting fabrication network, does all the administration work of user authorization management and sorts out who can access specific tools. The firewall settings can be defined to allow only intended traffic. Moreover, the effects from malware are eliminated as there is no direct connectivity between the OEMs and the factory.

The secureWISE server is highly reliable, with an overall availability of 99.904% and a KPI of 98.5%. To further prevent cyberattacks, the secureWISE team provides regular updates to the secureWISE server, even daily if necessary.

Full enterprise package of tools, features and suites that offer user-friendly security. User-friendly security across all the platforms enterprises use is critical to business efficiency and ability to scale. Instead of relying on sticky notes and notebooks full of passwords, users can leverage security features, including scheduler server enterprise edition (SSEE), single sign-on (SSO) and business management portal (BMP).

SSEE allows users to schedule files to be delivered at a specific time or during a particular event instead of logging on and downloading the files. This scheduler automation feature facilitates data analytics and AI from gathered machine data.

SSO means that users only need to log in once and don’t have to log in again. As your business grows with more factories to connect to, SSO allows you to have a single set of credentials (i.e., user ID and password) valid across all sites, and it can integrate with your company’s authentication (e.g., an HR system). Users leaving the company can be made to lose access to the system. Telit secureWISE offers securePASS as its SSO tool.

BMP is an addable access platform for remote connectivity that shows what services employees are accessing, what customers they are connecting to and more.

Telit secureWISE offers other layers of security, including multi-factor authentication (MFA) and an OEM connector tool. MFA allows users to log in and then receive a code for authentication. The OEM connector reverses the connection back to the factory. Here’s how it works: A field support engineer in front of a piece of equipment at a hosting facility can use the secureWISE connection back to the factory to order parts and troubleshoot securely.

Telit secureWISE for Semiconductors: Improve Performance and Protect Assets

Semiconductor OEM engineers can use Telit secureWISE for secure, end-to-end remote tool connectivity, leveraging tool data for monitoring, diagnostics and control. This IIoT platform uses multiple security barriers to prevent unauthorized data access, allowing machine builders and owners to monitor and improve equipment performance while protecting intellectual property. Access through a hub-and-spoke private network that’s a walled garden ensures that customer machine data is protected from internet-facing attacks. In semiconductor fabrication plants, process engineers and managers can use Telit secureWISE for secure, on-demand connectivity to tool and process data to enable real-time collaboration.

Telit secureWISE is industry-agnostic, applicable to any vertical handling information that requires protection, such as secret military information, patient records and other sensitive data. Instead of blocking all access or allowing all access, Telit secureWISE balances security among third parties that need access, regardless of sector or industry.

Telit secureWISE gives machine builders real-time, role-based, on-demand secure remote monitoring and mediation capabilities, improving machine health and increasing equipment uptime. A specialized security appliance at the customer site provides administrators with a single pane of glass for controlling and auditing access to specific equipment, as business needs dictate. Dashboards enable a 360-degree view of the tool-installed base, enhancing operational efficiency. Permissioned connectivity to tool and process data helps machine owners improve process management, increase equipment uptime and reduce costs associated with equipment support while ensuring that assets are protected.
