4 Game-Changing Impacts of NB-IoT and Cat M1 on Businesses

Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) and Category (Cat) M1 (also called LTE-M) are cellular low-power wide-area network (LPWA or LPWAN) technologies. They’re known for reducing costs and extending battery life for long-lasting deployments.

These cellular LPWA technologies support Power Saving Mode (PSM) and extended Discontinuous Reception (eDRX). They were introduced in 3GPP’s Release (Rel) 13.

NB-IoT and Cat M1 Use Cases and Applications

These cellular LPWA technologies offer extended coverage, as defined in Rel 13, which enhances connectivity in challenging environments. NB-IoT was introduced as a solution for stationary devices, while Cat M1 can also support mobility use cases. Rel 14 gave enhanced mobility functionality to NB-IoT but not to the extent of cellular networks. NB-IoT is ideal for smart meters, warehouses and underground facilities.

Compared to NB-IoT, Cat M1 can deliver higher data rates and offers lower latency. Cat M1’s use cases include asset trackers, cold chain monitors and mobile point-of-sale devices.

NB-IoT and Cat M1 will be relevant in 5G’s evolving landscape. As 4G sunsets, these technologies will continue to coexist with 5G due to their unmatched support for low-speed IoT use cases.

Security and maintenance costs are pivotal considerations in any IoT deployment. These cellular LPWA technology standards ensure secure transmissions and end-to-end application security.
