AMI Italia: Cellular-Enabled Defibrillators Help Save Lives Worldwide

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cardiovascular diseases are the number one cause of death worldwide. Most of those fatalities — nearly 18 million in 2016 alone — are due to heart attacks.

More people would survive a heart attack if they were near an automatic external defibrillator (AED). For each minute they don’t receive a life-saving shock, their chance of survival drops 10%.

The good news is the global AED market is growing, with a 7.23% CAGR between 2019 and 2026, Zion Market Research estimates. This rapid growth means more AEDs will be closer to more people as time goes on.

Portable AEDs with Live, Remote Access to Medical Professionals

AMI Italia is helping drive this trend with its GEO SAVER AED, created for use in public spaces, including:

  • Airports
  • Offices
  • Schools
  • Hotels
  • Beaches
  • Public transportation

Featuring an intuitive interface with voice and text prompts, AMI Italia says GEO SAVER is “user-friendly for any lay rescuer, even without minimal training.” One version is automatic, so users don’t even have to push a button to administer a shock.

Unlike most AEDs designed for public use, GEO SAVER has embedded 2G and 3G, as well as GPS. These technologies enable multiple features, such as:

  • GEO SAVER owners, such as public health agencies and large enterprises, can monitor the location and status of each AED. These tracking and monitoring abilities ensure they’re in the right places and are in working order. GPS enables geofencing to help protect against theft and loss.
  • Each AED can live stream an electrocardiogram (ECG) to AMISAVERCLOUD for real-time analysis. Physicians and other medical professionals can review the stream and coach the rescuer. The cloud platform can store the ECG for follow-up.

GEO SAVER is available globally, including where many people live far from hospitals and other medical facilities. For example, over 75% of cardiovascular disease (CVD) deaths are in low- and middle-income countries, the WHO says. By positioning AEDs to be closer to more people, GEO SAVER increases the likelihood they can be stabilized for transport.

The Telit Advantage

To develop GEO SAVER, AMI Italia turned to Telit. Telit provides GEO SAVER with SIM cards for quad-band 2G and dual-band 3G connectivity and one dashboard to streamline management. AMI Italia uses Telit OPTIMUS to assign their SIMs to the most cost-effective plan automatically. OPTIMUS is a billing solution designed to avoid bill shock.

Telit’s solutions provide three key benefits:

It enables GEO SAVER to be used virtually worldwide. A mining company could provide it to crews working in remote locations and be confident the AED will have connectivity.

Global connectivity enables AMI Italia to sell GEO SAVER in more countries for a bigger potential customer pool. “AMI Italia devices are sold in many countries worldwide. Telit roaming SIM cards present a global solution allowing us to cover this type of need without changing the SIM card depending on the destination country,” Sergio says.

It frees AMI Italia to focus on supporting GEO SAVER and developing other innovative solutions. They don’t have to manually compare mobile operators worldwide to line up service for AEDs.

We collaborated with Telit to create a smarter defibrillator. We wanted to align the product with our mission: innovative, efficient, competitive products improving defibrillator traceability, management and accessibility. We experienced constant technical and commercial support. Telit is a leader in the IoT field and guarantees to be at the forefront of technological innovation.
