What does a Competence Center do?

Telit customer support reaches 60 countries and premier design-in expertise is available through 26 sales and support offices worldwide. We supplement this capillary support effort with a global network of wireless experts from our distributors, online Telit Technical Support Forum, and over 30 Competence Centers.

Competence Centers are Telit-selected partner companies with considerable experience designing cellular and RF solutions along with proven skills in hardware, software, and mechanical component development. They are part of an innovative program to provide additional support services to our customers going beyond just the module.

With services from our Competence Centers customers can:

  • Have a reliable partner to outsource all or part of the end-device design and development effort

  • Remain focused on their core competences throughout the entire product development process, bringing more robust solutions to the market in shorter time frames

  • Bring more concepts and products into the markets they serve

Another type Competence Center is appointed for substantial expertise with specific vertical segments. These partner companies provide an extension to the technology-centric Competence Center program helping our customers navigate complex market scenarios and again reduce risk and time-to-market.

This is a new kind of support service. It has already been tried and welcomed by many customers, particularly new entrants to the dynamic m2m space. The expertise these partners bring can be used to reduce the risk of delays, direct and indirect cost overruns. These issues will typically occur when there is insufficient knowledge about best practices and procedures in specific segments. In addition they can provide go-to-market advice and assistance including help creating effective strategies.

For more than 15 years we were involved in different product developments, during the last seven years most of our work has been done in wireless applications using GSM/GPRS technology. CeTEC is an engineering lab with a strong focus on telemetry and telematic applications, systems, and terminal devices.
Its core technologies are machine-to-machine communication via GSM cellular networks and GPS satellite navigation, but also "neighboring" technologies such as RF-beacon tracking, internet GPRS & TCP/IP client-server communication, WLAN, bluetooth and IRDA (infrared) data transmission, especially to and from mobile devices.
The realization of working prototypes and feasibility studies based on these platforms often takes only a few days.

With more than a 10 year history in the field of GSM and GPS remote control, tracking and tracing, CeTEC looks back to a substantial volume of successful projects and products. Based on the long-standing experience in the international standardising and approval of mobile communications components and devices and the protocol, conformance and interoperability tests that go along with them, CETECOM develops test scenarios, test cases and database solutions in accordance with the applicable standards or according to individual, customer-specific requirements.

For M2M applications CETECOM has developed tailor-made concepts that support for example integrators of TELIT solutions with regard to the requirements for the approval of their products in various industry sectors and countries.

In addition to this project-related development CETECOM also conceives and creates own, industry-specific test solutions and test platforms such as the FACTSware conformance and A-GPS test platform or the project management tool TOM. Since its development in the year 2000 the TOM Database has been implemented successfully by several CETECOM customers so that the testing process of more than 60 percent of all mobile phones which have been approved for their market entry is supported and managed by the TOM database.

We have an intense success story. The two most significant cases are the following:
  1. Embedded systems with pure Internet network

    DEM has recently developed for the national leader in the door-2-door delivery a complete system for the quality control of the leaflet delivery. The system is composed by a control central, placed in and managed by DEM, and by a large team of wearable devices put on by the postmen- that automatically communicate GPS coordinates, absolute time and leaflet ID (reading a printed barcode) to the control central. The portable device is based on the GM862-GPS module, which is Python programmed to manage:

    • Bar code reading

    • Battery monitoring and re-charging process

    • GPS fixing and GPRS communication to the server


    Via the GRPS link, each device can have over-the-air application firmware updated and maintenance services.

    DEM has activated, managed and performed the whole product development process:
    • Customer needs analysis

    • Hardware (schematic/PCB layout/BOM definition and optimization) and software/firmware (Python scripts) and mechanical (custom box for portable equipment) project, development and prototyping (PCA and plastic case)

    The data from the field are stored into a data base and then published to the customer via web application. The custom can download data and statistics, create templates, modify configuration parameters, hence performing the over-all control of the delivery process in order to offer a higher quality service.
  2. Embedded systems with mixed communication links

    DEM has taken part into a complex development project voted to create a complete system to implement wireless sensors networks, based on ZigBee standard (2.4GHz IEEE 802.15.4), and interfaced to the DEM control central through a gateway board based on the GM862-QUAD module. The whole system has been projected according to industrial and electrical standards, and each module (sensor modules, gateway module, power module) is equipped in a DIN guide box, in order to be easily assembled by common electricians without new cables or infrastructures. This system has firstly been used to remotely monitor the electrical consumption data of a portion of the Expo area in Genoa.
  3. PC based systems

    In 2008 DEM has developed a custom marketing system, aimed at acquiring personal data in maternity wards. The system is composed by the DEM control central, equipped with custom data base and web applications for data publication, and by a number of kiosks placed into maternity wards of territorial hospitals.

    Each kiosk is based on a Linux equipped dual-core motherboard, where a custom application has been implemented to give the appealing user interface and to collect the required personal data. The GPRS link to the control central has been realized by the GT863-PY terminal, managed via the RS232 interface by the motherboard through a Python script. The kiosk appears as a linear, slim and very appealing touch screen monitor, thanks to the accurate mechanical engineering and study, voted to create a beautiful and compact design object where technology and intelligence are not visible but only perceived.

Diagnostic System for Train Maintainer
is able to improve the maintenance operations on modern train fleet allowing an efficient, reliable, and rapid transmission of faults and diagnostics train data to infrastructure using both GPRS and WiFi as network layers for communication. Particularly through GPRS, it is possible to access, in degraded conditions, the on-board system allowing some recovery and maintenance operations. In addition, the train's GPS position is transmitted together with the alarms/faults data through the GPRS and WiFi interface acting as a gateway between the board and ground side of the system.

European Research Project
in the railway industry was mainly focused on data interconnection between trains and the counterpart railway infrastructures. The communication channel was based on GSM/GPRS modem devices for data connection and HTTP and FTP protocols for data exchange. Particularly, a specific call back mechanism was designed for GSM data calls, preventing unauthorized access to on-board train side by callers different from ground side infastructure.

Another project was focused on defining and specifing a complete maintenance support system for European railways; it allows the remote monitoring and diagnosis of complex systems aboard trains and inside fixed plants. It enables automatically linking real-time data with suitable technical documentation, retrieving it in standard format from a distributed database, and showing proper information to final users, by means of a complete set of tools. The definition and the implementation of a VPN network infrastructure was one of the project tasks. The goal of such network infrastructure was to allow a bidirectional and secure communication between the trains and the railway operator network through the GSM/GPRS on-board modem devices.

Laboratory for Telecommunications at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (LTFE) in Ljubljana plays an important role in education, research and development of telecommunication systems and services.
Activities are conducted within many national and international projects and result in successful implementations and publications. The research work and project work interested many students, who joined the laboratory as junior researchers, researchers and teaching assistants. Laboratory’s research work is oriented to the traffic measurement and traffic theory, simulation of switching and routing of traffic in synthetic and real networks. Research work is also related to the quality of services mechanisms in combination with transmission of data, audio and video traffic over wireline and wireless IP networks.

Significant effort is given to exploration of the use of telecommunications and information technology for people with disabilities. The project work is related to development of information technology systems and services. Covered are all key telecommunication technologies, such as NGN: IP, xDSL, MPLS, WIMAX, GPRS, UMTS, and TM, as well as XML, and web applications. Important fields of work represent design and development of signaling system No. 7, converged services and multi-accessible portal systems based on fixed, mobile, IP and voice platforms. Laboratory for Telecommunications closely co-operates with the telecommunications industry, including vendors, service providers and content providers.

Laboratory for Telecommunications is actively involved in around 30 concurrent projects from different fields of telecommunications. A2E has designed and developed a wide range of products that fit within the wireless space, and are currently in production and use in both high and low volumes with their respective target markets.

Once such example is the UMTS Video Compression Solution detailed below, which was designed, developed and moved through to production by A2E.

This device and its next generation are currently in deployment in its target market and are being manufactured at below its original required cost envelope.

UMTS Compression Solution Example
This product was designed to fit within the military environment (extended temperature ranges) providing a networked video compression product, based on multiple DSP’s and including stereo audio support, with SD camera control.

The solution was also designed to be able to handle a wide range of power supply requirements.

The communication aspects of the product, designed primarily to be in a remote location was focused on utilising the GSM/UMTS network, and an HSxPA modem was provided to allow this connectivity, for transmission and reception of data.

In addition an Ethernet and usb interfaces where provided for utilisation when available and also configuration purposes.

The solution was type approved for use within a number of network environments, as well as meeting the required compliance for industrial, commercial and high temperature ruggedised environments.

Manufacturing Capabilities and Partnerships A2E has generated a set of successful partnerships with local and international Contract manufacturing solutions, allowing for production volumes ranging from tens a month to multiple hundreds of thousands per month.

A2E works closely with the customer in the selection of an appropriate manufacturing solution, and can provide recommendations dependant on the scope and scale of the product. Additionally A2E has extensive experience of working within an existing customer/contract manufacturer relationship, and from these developments has created ongoing relationships with new contract manufacturers, expanding its base of partners.

As part of the A2E process, the design is developed through to pre-production, developing and managing test runs, and proving the pre-production units meet specification before final handover to the customer. Other options allow for A2E to manage the production process as well.

Finally A2E has a number of partnerships in the Design space, for mechanical, usability and aesthetic aspects of a product development. Using these partnerships, allows for A2E to provide a full bespoke solution to customers, allowing for the development of a complete solution for initial concept through to volume manufacture.

Cost has always been important; but probably never more so than in today's economic climate.
At RFI, we are conscious that money spent on approvals needs to generate a Return On Investment (ROI), just like any other investment; so managing and reducing the costs of approvals is vital.
As part of the Smart Approvals concept, we have used our Expertise to develop test automation and management systems (including the LIMS and OmniPass systems) which allow us to perform the work in less time, and hence to offer a very cost effective solution.

TTP has developed products for a range of customers in many countries. Examples that illustrate TTP's track record of developing cost-effective and reliable products include:

  • VHF radio modems - TTP has developed two generations of product for a major communications company for industrial telemetry. These developments included RF design, digital design, mechanical housing design and software development. The modems are subjected to stringent Type Approval tests and are designed for long life in the field, in some cases in an automotive environment. A primary objective for the development project was substantial cost reduction, and TTP achieved the target, reducing cost to almost half of the previous bought-in product cost.

  • Satellite radios - TTP has developed satellite radio products to the SDARS radio system, for a major brand, carrying out PCB design and mechanical housing design. These consumer and automotive after-market products are semi-portable (dockable) and must operate in the US automotive environment. The market is very competitive and a key programme requirement has been meeting challenging cost targets. TTP has now carried out three radio designs since 2005, with its client achieving strong sales in the market.

  • Yarn clearer - TTP co-developed with its client's team a system for measuring the thickness and colour of threads on-line during the spinning and winding processes. TTP carried out analogue and digital design, software development, and mechanical design. The environment in textile factories is harsh and reliability is a crucial requirement to ensure high throughput. The product used a new architecture and the result was a halving in product cost compared with the previous product.

Janus Remote Communications has extensive experience in hardware, software and mechanical design specifically focused on GSM/GPRS functionality. Our experience is illustrated best in the Wizard, Wizard II and Terminus.
The Wizard is a unique GSM based GPRS/EDGE modem that is Java programmable and operates as an external wireless modem with serial connectivity providing an ideal solution for telemetry, SCADA and remote sensory devices. The Wizard provides a platform for potential applications including transportation, utilities, retail, security and healthcare.
The Wizard II is a second-generation M2M solution featuring 2 serial RS-232 ports, RJ-45 Ethernet port, Dial-up, internal GPS, 24-channel digital inputs and 8 digital outputs. The Wizard II saves data in flash memory and polls ever 200 ms for high performance monitoring. Data is received from a wide variety of sensor types, processed and then passed on to a database server for report generation.
The Terminus features 9 user configurable CMOS GPIO's, 1 11 bit ADC Input, a RS-232 AT Command UART interface with an AT interface selectable between DB9 or 50-pin header, and an audio handset interface. Additionally, the Terminus has an input supply range of 7-18 Vdc jump start and load dump tolerant, and a power supply connection via standard 2.1 mm barrel connector or 50 pin header. The Wizard is a unique GSM based GPRS/EDGE modem that is Java programmable and operates a as an external wireless modem with serial connectivity providing an ideal solution for telemetry, SCADA and remote sensory devices. Wizard II

The Wizard II is a second-generation M2M solution featuring 2 serial RS-232 ports, RJ-45 Ethernet port, Dial-up, internal GPS, 24-channel digital inputs and 8 digital outputs. The Wizard II saves data in flash memory and polls ever 200 ms for high performance monitoring. Data is received from a wide variety of sensor types, processed and then passed on to a database server for report generation.

Terminus

The GSM864Q Terminus Series is an intelligent GSM/GPRS control terminal product that encapsulates everything needed for wireless M2M capability in one compact unit. Utilizing the powerful Telit chipset, the GSM864Q can host and control many wireless applications, minimizing the need for extra components. Alternatively, it can be used as a stand-alone, powerful GPRS modem due to the intrinsic TCP/IP stack.
The GSM864Q is self-contained with its own SIM card reader and standard connector interfaces reducing the need for further hardware costs. Its wide range of user configurable I/Os allow the user to add functions and features making this terminal both versatile and cost-effective. Additionally, the built-in real-time Python interpreter and powerful scripting tools enable the end user to create and run custom applications. The 50-pin header allows board-to-board mounting and circuit connection with a standard ribbon cable for ease of integration.
