Telit Category 1 LTE Module Successfully Passes Major Carrier Inter-Operability Testing with Korea’s KT

LE866A1-KK added to growing portfolio of approved IoT modules with KT

Seoul, September 29, 2016 – Telit, a global enabler of the Internet of Things (IoT), today announced successful conclusion of inter-operability testing (I-O) for its LE866A1-KK module with KT, Korea’s leading mobile network operator. I-O testing ensures that compliance, reliability and quality of the module meet or exceed stringent standards for activation and use on KT mobile networks. With its ultra-compact 15 x 25 mm LGA footprint, the LE866A1-KK LTE Category 1 (Cat 1) module, is ideal for IoT applications with material space constraints such as wearable trackers, health monitoring devices and smart watches.

Cat 1-based devices deliver significant reduction in operating costs, size and power consumption compared to traditional LTE-based products. The approved module features low power consumption, which results in a significant increase in battery life meeting requirements from applications like wearable electronics. The product also reduces design costs and complexity compared to higher speed 4G devices, making it ideal for price-sensitive application areas relying on fast go-to-market such as fleet management, asset tracking, security and surveillance, point of sale and smart metering.

“The LE866A1-KK Cat 1 module is an ideal platform to accelerate the expansion of LTE technology into more IoT application areas where long life, low cost and low power are more important than high speed. The combination of Telit technical expertise with the reliability and coverage of KT networks translates into real advantages for both KT and Telit customers,” said Steven Kim, Regional Sales Director, Telit Korea. “In addition, an LTE Cat 1 module is undergoing certification with SKT and we expect this process to be concluded in early 2017.  Telit is also responding to plans by KT and SKT, looking to certify NB IoT modules for the second half of 2017.”

The single mode LE866A1-KK has a downlink data rate of up to 10 Mbps and uplink data rate of up to 5 Mbps, which are adequate for the current majority of IoT applications. The Telit IoT Portal-ready module is member of the xE866-nested family, featuring pin-to-pin compatibility with 2G and 3G modules, the GE866 and the UE866 respectively. It enables fast time-to-market not only in countries like Korea where LTE has already become the predominant cellular technology, but also in other geographies where GPRS and UMTS are still widely deployed. The family concept enables developers to employ a single PCB layout for 2G, 3G and 4G technologies, i.e. “design once and deploy globally.”
