Telit Attends Asian Utility Week 2014

Telit showcases its comprehensive collection of cellular and short range wireless communications modules tailored for the fast-growing smart metering market to support smart metering manufacturers expand globally.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, August 11, 2014 Telit Wireless Solutions a global provider of high-quality machine-to-machine (M2M) modules, services and solutions, today attended Asian Utility Week 2014 (booth No.031) to showcase its comprehensive collection of cellular and short range wireless communications modules tailored for the fast-growing smart metering market. As Asia‘s most trend-setting and innovative professional conference and exhibition for the smart grid and smart metering industry, the Asian Utility Week is also the largest professional expo in the region featuring smart metering, measurement and customer relationship management (CRM) in the field of public utilities including electricity and water management.

In the field of smart metering, cellular and short-range communication modules are the two most critical technologies for devices to work bidirectional data flows. As the globally recognized leader in the field of M2M, Telit delivers the broadest portfolio of cellular, short range and positioning modules. Telit products on display at the exhibition include: the GL865 V3 and HE910 cellular modules plus the ME50/70 and NE50/70 series of short range modules.

Taking the GL865 V3 cellular module as an example, the product is backwards compatible with the popular GL865 series. However it is based on the latest Intel single chip, 65nm process CMOS technology, Python programming language support and VQFN packaging, it maintains full pad-level compatibility. The physical properties and lower cost of the new packaging make it a good fit for products applied in equipment tracking, automatic meter reading, security and battery-powered assets. As an integral part of Telit’s ONE STOP. ONE SHOP. Delivery model, short range products can be considered a complementary technology playing a significant role in segments such as smart metering. Products like the ME70, showcased during the exhibition, are part of a group of modules specially introduced by Telit for the energy metering industry. Unregulated 3.3 V supply requirements simplify integration with standard meter electronics, eliminating the need for a multi-voltage power supply and lowering Bill of Material (BOM) costs. The unique 1W radio output power combined with -120 dBbm sensitivity significantly improve the meter’s reading range and reliability, while the ultra-low-current standby mode allows successful integration of the module into battery-powered electronic meter designs for utilities such as gas and water which require battery replacement cycles every few years.

In recent years, Smart City construction has been growing in various Asia-Pacific countries with their respective governments being a key driving force behind the development. The most important objective for Smart City construction is overcoming energy and emissions challenges, which significantly rely on smart grid technology.

Presently, Australia, Japan, China, Korea and the Southeast Asian countries in Asia Pacific are increasing investments in smart grid, especially in the field of smart metering with the government support and backing. Pike Research estimates that the region will experience smart meter installation compound growth rate of 37%, reaching 350 million by 2016 up from 53 million in 2010.  In the South East Asia market, Pike Research forecasts that the smart meter market will enjoy a high-growth period from 2011-2020, with compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of smart meters shipped reaching 98.1%, and individual countries achieving CAGRs from 60.1% to 129.3%. Over the past few years, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia, among others, have made substantial investments in smart grids.

This undoubtedly provides great development opportunities for smart meter companies in the Asia-Pacific region. Meanwhile, market competition has resulted in tougher requirements for businesses, especially for companies planning to market products or solutions around the world.

“We hope to be able to help smart meter companies take advantage of these development opportunities. We do not only provide m2m modules, but also clients can benefit greatly from our One Stop.
