Telit Application Development Environment uses the IoT Module to Run Customer Apps

New generation IoT AppZone significantly reduces time to prototype and market with Android

London, February 17, 2016 – Telit , a global enabler of the Internet of Things (IoT), today announced a new generation of the Telit IoT AppZone application development environment (ADE), to include the widely supported Android open source  framework. The new ADE will expand from the well-established AppZone C and Python base to deliver the power and ease of use of Android. The newly added framework from Google is becoming increasingly popular with developer communities in a wide range of IoT vertical application areas such as automotive, wearables, gateways and smart home. The expanded environment will allow developers to leverage their experience with Android, using the same tools and APIs in a framework they are familiar with, reducing development time and effort. The new IoT AppZone includes tools and libraries for mobile data provisioning and management through Telit IoT Connectivity services and for thing-to-cloud data integration and application enablement with Telit IoT Platform services. And because the application runs inside the module, the bill of material for the customer device is also reduced.
The Telit IoT AppZone is a full-featured ADE comprised of an integrated development environment (IDE) based on Eclipse and Android Studio with Telit developed plugins delivering high-level functionality such as enhanced project creation wizard, application deployment and configuration, debug tools and interface to software version control systems.  It is an integral part of the Telit IoT Portal, which is a one stop resource center for developers to connect IoT devices, apps, cloud, and IT systems.
The IoT AppZone leverages the power and flexibility of professional grade framework and APIs including industry de-facto standard – Android – which Telit has tailored and enhanced with extensions for IoT modules and services, using robust, thoroughly tested building blocks and architecture. Leveraging framework security architecture and components, the ADE offers developers a rich set of threat mitigating components including support for secure boot, application sandboxing and cryptographic APIs.
The ADE’s full integration with other Telit products and services, including with a wide range of specially designed products for the automotive sector, allows developers to build IoT systems from device to cloud, reducing time to market, enabling complete end-to-end solutions with minimal effort. Its IoT optimized architecture allows developers to collect information from sensors directly or through short-range wireless modules, send data securely to the cloud, publish or interface with enterprise systems using an IoT Platform agent and the IoT Portal; and to deploy and update firmware and applications over-the-air, manage configuration files and security.
In a typical IoT device integration project, developers usually employ a microcontroller to manage the module and other device peripherals. The Telit IoT AppZone provides a cost and complexity saving alternative consolidating hardware components embedding the application software right in the module.
“By adding the Android framework to the IoT AppZone in this new generation of the ADE we have not only enriched its feature set and flexibility but also expanded the reach of the tool to a much larger community of developers who can now enjoy the benefits of consolidating hardware and simplifying development by installing and running their application in the modules,” said Felix Marchal, Telit’s Chief Product Officer. “With so many opportunities for business transformation powered by IoT innovation, the IoT AppZone becomes a necessity for developers everywhere to shorten their development cycles and time to market”
