Telit Technology Helps Tesc Manage Traffic Light Junctions in São Paulo

Módulo de Monitoramento, an IoT device developed to expand and better manage São Paulo’s traffic light system, uses the Telit HE910 module to provide wireless connectivity with the central facility.

São Paulo, 13 August 2014 – Telit Wireless Solutions, a leading global provider of high-quality machine-to-machine (M2M) modules and services, has announced that Tesc, a manufacturer and developer of traffic products and solutions, has selected the HE910 for its wireless traffic management system.

São Paulo has approximately five thousand light junctions and only about 20% of those are integrated in a managed traffic system. This year, the city’s government decided to introduce a series of traffic improvement plans that included the development of the Módulo de Monitoramento, an Internet of Things device that will boost the number of traffic lights that are monitored and managed.

This device employs sensors to monitor the status of the traffic lights and Telit modules transmit the data as well as event alarms to a monitoring and management central facility, which manages the light junctions and the traffic system.  This allows operations to be synchronized, thereby improving the flow of traffic and enabling a fast response to event alarms.

The Telit HE910, a member of Telit’s flagship xE910 family, features a compact 28.2 x 28.2 x 2.2 mm LGA form factor. The family  comprises 2G, 3G and 4G products in GSM/GPRS|UMTS|LTE and CDMA|EV-DO technologies. They employ a common form factor as well as electrical and programing interfaces, which allow developers like Tesc to implement a "design once, use anywhere" strategy.

“The Módulo de Monitoramento allows a quick and easy way for city controllers to manage their traffic light system”, says Mario Piai, Engineering Manager at Tesc. “This is also a solution that can be easily adapted to any local necessity and demand”.

“Tesc’s solution shows how the M2M world is helping administrations to turn urban centers into smart cities”, says Ricardo Buranello, director of Telit Latin America. “Wireless connectivity facilitates deployment, which in turn results in a fast improvement in urban mobility”.
