Cities around the world have a transportation problem. Parking spaces are few, CO2 emissions are high and traffic can cause near-constant gridlock on urban roads. There’s a new major player in urban transportation to cope with these travel complications: the shared mobility market, which includes connected, rentable vehicles such as electric scooters. Twenty-one countries now have scooter sharing programs and, between 2018 and 2019, the number of shared scooters on the road grew from about 25,000 to 66,000 — a dramatic increase of 164 percent.
A Green Scooter Solution
Kumpan electric, a Germany-based electric scooter manufacturer, has spent the past decade designing products to suit the needs of this growing market. For cities, they offer a free-floating sharing system in which users must book and park scooters within a defined business area. There’s also a station-based option, ideal for companies or organizations that want to make scooters accessible only to their employees that includes a charging station and enables user identification card verification.
Compact and quiet, Kumpan electric’s scooters do not emit any CO2 and can travel up to 186 km at 45 km per hour with a range up to 62 km per battery (according to testing standards ECE 134/2014) before requiring a battery recharge. For safety, scooters include a two-channel antilock braking system and an innovative rear-wheel lift-off protection feature. A touch display allows drivers to keep track of speed, power consumption and range data.

Cellular connectivity plays a vital role in shared mobility. Program organizers must be able to keep track of their scooter fleet, from the exact location of each vehicle to battery status to mechanical problems. Kumpan electric needed an IoT partner that could supply a full range of support to develop this facet of its products from telematics to SIMs to an IoT platform. “The last thing we needed was to piece together these services from several different providers,” says Kumpan electric co-founder and CMO Philipp Tykesson. “We wanted an all-in-one solution that could help simplify our internal processes.”
A Comprehensive Partnership
They found that all-in-one solution with Telit along with flexible cellular coverage. “They offered worldwide network coverage and the ability to prioritize one network over another when choosing providers,” Tykesson says. “The overall price played a decisive role for us as well.”
Kumpan electric scooters utilize the Telit GE866-QUAD cellular modules and Bluetooth 4.2 low energy plug-and-play modules. Kumpan electric also uses Telit’s simWISE for connectivity and the IoT platform for device management.
Leveraging Telit's connectivity solutions, Kumpan electric can provide its customers with ongoing vehicle and software development and Over-the-Air updates to battery and firmware. Moreover, Kumpan can offer an open API that can connect to any fleet management software option and simple control and monitoring of sharing fleets.

Kumpan electric’s scooters are transforming the daily lives of scooter sharing users across Germany and Switzerland. The company is also planning an international expansion to include much of western Europe, the U.S. and Canada. Kumpan electric’s scooters can already be purchased throughout most of Europe, Canada and some states of the U.S..
Scooter users enjoy a flexible transportation option that helps them find a parking place, avoid traffic jams and improve air quality by reducing CO2 emissions. “For our company, the opportunity to enter the growing shared mobility market is exciting,” says Tykesson. “We’ve achieved more visibility and brand awareness and enjoyed overall growth and expansion as a result. It’s opening up new horizons for us.”
