Does M2M Need An Identity?
M2M isn't a term that is well known outside the industry; moreover it's confusing. The first "M" used to be a machine on a factory floor, but nowadays it's a device or a moving part, and the second "M" is a computer system. However, that hasn't hindered the development of countless, diverse M2M applications that allow key information to be exchanged without human intervention...

M2M Security: Are There Issues?
Sales of smart phones have bucked the economy and smart utility meters are entering millions of homes, so valid security concerns are emerging. Smart phones, for example, have open operating systems, which means that they are vulnerable to viruses...

M2M Moving Forward
M2M has been a success story and it came through the recession in good shape, but success has been achieved in vertical market sectors and proprietary platforms. That is yesterday's stovepipe model: yesterday, that is, in mainstream data communications. It's not an efficient way to communicate and it's also a barrier to further development...

Quality: The Really Big Picture
Telit has set itself an ambitious quality program - one that goes much further than reliable performance over long lifetimes, which can be 5, 10, 15 or even more years. Management has recognized the need to make quality pervasive, i.e. it must permeate the whole organization in order to better address the needs of the fast-growing M2M marketplace...

The World Is Full Of Data: No.1
Data is all around us: literally. Soil contains data on moisture, salinity, pH value and density. There's pollution data on the air we breathe. The car we drive pushes out data streams on speed, petrol consumption and CO2 emissions. And critical data on blood sugar levels, blood pressure, cancer and so on are hidden inside our bodies...

The World is Full of Data: No. 2
As indicated in "The World is Full of Data: No.1", data based on physical, quantifiable parameters has always been there. The only change is the amount, which continues to grow, and our ability to measure and process it.

M2M is Win, Win, and more Win
Step back for a moment and reflect on the many tangible benefits that M2M is bringing to consumers, companies, enterprises and organizations. Today's crop of B2B stand-alone solutions has the proven ability to cut costs, save time, improve operational efficiency and enhance customer service. That's a powerful combination: one that makes a positive impact on the bottom line...

Future Proofing Cellular Solutions
Modules are the critical component in B2B solutions. Critical because the cost of replacing a faulty module is prohibitory expensive in many if not most solutions. The quality bar has therefore to be set as high as possible in order to enable long lifetimes and meet the standards set by demanding market sectors. Smart meter solutions, for example, will typically stay in place for 5, 10, 15 or more years and the automotive industry evaluates new technologies for years before adopting them.

M2M in the Cloud: No.1 Exciting Times Ahead
M2M in the Cloud has a nice marketing ring about it, so we can expect to see it applied to solutions that don't justify the term. Unlike Cloud Computing there's no formal definition: do a search on Wikipedia and the site asks if you mean "M24 in the Cloud". However, we can make some pragmatic assumptions about the requisite functionality and use to determine if a particular solution stacks up or not.

M2M in the Cloud: Back to Basics
M2M in the Cloud is a nice marketing term. Unfortunately, as in many other areas of ICT (Information and Communications Technology), the concept has not only been over-hyped, it has also been interpreted in ways that reflect the agendas of different vendors and this has resulted in the dissemination of confusing and at times contradictory information.

M2M in the Cloud: It´s the Right Place
The end of the first article in this short series focused on the fact that once M2M data is in the cloud it can be used in myriad ways. One of the more obvious ways is to use the cloud of an enterprise customer since this facilitates the integration of this data in mainstream business processes, as does its conversion into an XML data structure.

M2M in the Cloud: enhancing business processes
This is the third and final article on M2M in the Cloud (for now). Locating solutions in the cloud enables physical benefits such as efficient, flexible use of computing resources, but there is a generic benefit that occurs when communication services are developed using Internet approaches and are delivered using Internet business models.

Network Congestion & Lightweight Protocols
Cellular networks are becoming congested, not only because they are transporting more data, but also because the transportation mechanisms are not particularly efficient. A regular cellular network takes 21 signaling messages to wake up an idle B2C device (e.g. a smartphone), tell it to become active, identify it, change the status in the network's database, allocate an IP address and finally set up a dedicated connection.
