An Association Bringing Together the Best on the Market
In February 2007, key players serving in niche areas of the machine-to-machine (m2m) market came together from the automation technology, application software, electrical engineering, IT and telecommunications sectors to form the m2m alliance.
Machine-to-machine refers to the automated communication between machines involving terminals such as robots, vehicles or containers communicating with a central control station in order to remotely monitor, control, and service machines, equipment, and systems. This concept has been traditionally described as telemetry. Communication between machines, or more specifically, terminals, involves the application of information and communication technology in conjunction with micro-systems technology.
The m2m alliance is an open initiative for suppliers and users of m2m solutions. Its goal is to provide a forum for the market interests of those involved to leverage the combined potential and drive market development. The primary focus of the m2m alliance is to promote the distribution of the various m2m technologies and publicize the numerous opportunities. Furthermore, the alliance plans to achieve technical harmonization for m2m applications as part of a drive toward standardization. The m2m alliance is taking a dual-channel approach to networking. The Technology Working Group primarily targets those involved in the m2m value-added chain and promotes standardization on the part of vendors. The Public Relations Working Group concentrates on the exchange of relevant information and ideas with various industries, as well as focusing on research and training. It also serves as the alliance's interface with the media, politicians, administrative bodies and other associations.
