Telit Unified Form Factor

The Unified form Factor (UFF) concept, represent the idea of a family of products characterized by the same mechanical shape, electrical and logical interface, but making use of different radio access technology. This new approach allows access to geographical markets that require different cellular technologies by simply using the module with the required technology.

Telit has taken great care to minimize any differences in the product interfaces with the Unified Form Factor; nevertheless, some minor differences are present. This is due to the fact that different chipset technologies have different electrical and mechanical characteristics. However, the application can, with some care, easily accommodate multiple wireless modems. The mechanical integration is a primary objective for Telit. While changing the electrical interface of the application may be simple at times, changing the mechanical is often not trivial and can be difficult or simply too expensive. Therefore, Telit strives to guarantee the same mechanical footprint of the GC as well as for the hardware platforms of the CC and UC product families.

UFF modules have the same length (except UC864-G, which is slightly longer) and width; and the modules have different thicknesses. The different hardware platform used for the CC and UC need more room for the PCB. So, the GSM module is single sided, while the other two modules, CC and UC, are double sided.

The products embrace different cellular technologies, from GSM to HSDPA, from the IS-95A/B to CDMA 2000 1x, and, therefore, they offer different data transfer capabilities ranging from 9.6Kbps for the circuit switched GSM to 7.2Mbps packet data of HSDPA and from the circuit switched 14.4Kbps of the IS-95 A, to 153.6 Kbps full duplex packet data of the CDMA2000 1x release0.

Telit UFF Benefits

  • Promotes efficient use of the NRE (non recurring engineering) costs assigned to the development of the customer's application.
  • Enables customers to develop applications based on today's mobile operator GSM/GPRS cellular technology, which if required, might be upgraded in the future to higher data speed capability such as EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA protecting the customer's investment.
  • Provides one application for different markets. The possibility to design an application once and take advantage of the global coverage and services afforded by the combination of the two main cellular technologies, the GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS and IS-95/CDMA2000.
